Hustler / Mini FasTrak / 2009 Review

by Michael Goldston
(Star, Idaho)

After considerable searching and test driving, I finally decided to buy the Hustler Mini FasTrak to replace my aging Dixon ZTR.

First impressions:
1) the Hustler looks bullet proof. Very solid, durable frame, deck and mechanical linkages;
2) with dual gas tanks I don't expect to run out of gas very often;
3) capable of fast mowing and transport speed;
4) very quick steering making it necessary to take extra care with edging and getting close to ponds, ditches and obstacles;
5) the 17HP Kohler engine seems easy to service and I expect as reliable as my old 13HP B&S;
6) not as noisy as most other mowers I checked out, but doesn't purr either;
7) very simple, easy to use controls and deck position adjustment;
8) the automatic parking brake (with handles in open position) is much better than having to remember to set or unset something;
9) cutting with with mulching kit is as good as my Dixon (which was very good).

The only thing I don't care for so much is the very quick steering. I don't want to accidently run this thing in my pond or irrigation ditch!

Overall, I am very pleased with the Hustler after my first 4 days of ownership.

4th Season of Mowing Update NEW
by: Anonymous

2013 is my 4th season using the Hustler. I continue to like the machine. It is has proven very reliable overall. I had problems with what I consider premature belt wear and failure until I learned not to engage the belt drive a full speed. I strongly recommend this procedure. Changing belts on the machine is a good deal of work and can be frustrating until you get the hang of it. I also strongly advise buying belts from the dealer. Trying to find a "cheaper" replacement belt at the auto parts store turned out to be a mistake. The belt length is critical and is very hard to install if the belt is a tad short. My other complaint is the grass build up inside the deck. Because moving the big heavy deck is real work, I find that setting an old wire milk crate under the front to raise it, and using a 4" wide putty knife to scrape out the grass works for me. Since I mulch, I get a lot of grass all over. I continue to use my electric blower to clean the grass which collects inside the pulley/belt chambers and the cooling fans under the seat. The Mini FasTrak has proved a good machine, and built like a tank.

Fast Steering NEW
by: Anonymous

On the initial testing at the dealer I too felt the steering was too sensitive. Mower was for my wife. She no longer uses it so I took it over. Getting used to it is all it took, like anything else new.

Also, reducing the rpms, reduces the pump velocity and slows down the steering. There is plenty of HP (18 Honda for me) to mow at the lower speeds.

Mini FasTrak Problems
by: Mike

Sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your Mini FasTrak. I've had mine for a few months now and continue to be satisfied with it. No problems of any kind. I mow 1/2+ acre about every 4 days. The yard has a lot of trees, fencing, flower beds, and a pond to mow around.
I have been taking pretty good care of the Mini. I store it in my shed, and blow out the loose grass after most every mowing. I lift the seat and blow the grass from the fans which cool the hydrostatic drive. It seems to collect there.
I would be interested in hearing more about your experience.
Thanks for sharing.
