John Deere/757/2006 Mower Review
I am a home owner. This is my first ZTR. I have five acres to cut. I purchased the John Deere 757 new in 2006 for $8500. I put around 30 hours a year on it. In 2010 at 137 hours the PTO Clutch failed. It was out of warranty. The dealer charged me over $400 for the repair.
In 2016 with 301 hours on it the Kawasaki FH721D 25 hp engine developed an oil leak. The dealer said I need new front/rear crankshaft seals, new head gaskets and maybe new heads and a new breather plate. Without heads the estimate is $1400 and with heads it would be $1800. I'll do the maintenance myself and save over 65%.
Aside from the engine, it cuts grass well, the ride is a little bumpy at times (no suspension), handling is good and tune ups are easy. All the spark plugs, oil drain/filter, fuel/air filter and belts are easy to access.
Dealer price for my first tune up in 2008 was $294. The last tune up I did myself in 2015 cost $77.91. I have replaced the battery once and replaced both front tires once.
I cannot rate John Deere customer service, because I haven't tried to contact them. Dealer service is too casual and sometimes their vocabulary needs to be cleaned up. Otherwise, it is satisfactory.
I don't feel like I got a great deal on the 757 due to the inferior quality of the engine. My intent was to purchase a mower that would last for 25 years. I guess they saw me coming. John Deere has lost my trust in their product. I don't think I would be comfortable purchasing from them again.
